Blog EntryKokeshi Japanese DollsJun 12, '08 7:47 AM

Kokeshi wooden dolls are one of the most unique and interesting of Japan's many traditional folk crafts. Usaburo Kokeshi, a company that specializes in wood cutting and the manufacture of Japanese toys and traditional Japanese dolls, exhibited their popular Kokeshi series at the Tokyo International Gift Show 2008. The Kokeshi dolls produced by Usaburo are unlike traditional styles found in northern Japan in that they are not restricted in the use of colors and materials. High quality trees grown in the mountainous areas of Gunma Prefecture that don't exhibit a wood grain pattern are used in the Kokeshi series to ensure the proper coloration and expression in the dolls. These Kokeshi dolls are good for souvenirs or presents and are available for as little as 1000 yen.Watch this video of Kokeshi Exhibition

Japanese shot of the week... hmmm... do I even need to say it... Japan, land of tradition and trend, culture and clash, elegant and eccentric...

This Buddhist Monk was standing very still on this street corner just before the Lightning Gate, Kaminari Mon, en-route to Asakusa's famous Sensou-ji Temple.

Just a visual thought for all of you....

Enjoy!
