Their daily lives, however, are hard and strict. In the morning, they strive for progress in their skills. They usually practice Japanese dance, tea ceremony, shamisen, a Japanese traditional stringed instrumental, flower arrangement, and so on. They learn a lot of Japanese culture. After lunch and a rest, they start to prepare for work by making up, arranging hair, and putting on kimono. At night, they entertaion customers in a Japanese-style room by serving alcohol, dancing, singing and playing shamisen. They finish work around one or two. Their daily lives are really hard, but they take great pride in their job. They are one of Japan's cultural treasures.

Check out this beautiful video of Maiko Dance...........

Check out my blogs:

Princessdiary

Aquamarine

Chessnut

Iceage

Daffodils

Usaburo Kokeshi, a company that specializes in wood cutting and the manufacture of Japanese toys and traditional Japanese dolls, exhibited their popular Kokeshi series at the Tokyo International Gift Show 2008. The Kokeshi dolls produced by Usaburo are unlike traditional styles found in northern Japan in that they are not restricted in the use of colors and materials. High quality trees grown in the mountainous areas of Gunma Prefecture that don't exhibit a wood grain pattern are used in the Kokeshi series to ensure the proper coloration and expression in the dolls. These Kokeshi dolls are good for souvenirs or presents and are available for as little as 1000 yen.Watch this video of Kokeshi Exhibition

Check out this beautiful video of Kokeshi dolls.........
Hakone Glass Forest

Last weekend my wife and I took an overnight trip to Hakone, which is a small hot spring resort town near Mt. Fuji and west of Tokyo. There are many small museums in the town including the Hakone Glass Forest.

The reason I give this museum only two stars is that although their are some nice pieces of Venetian Glass in the museum most of the area is taken up with shops. It is disturbing when the museum shop is as big as the museum itself. The museum cost JPY 1,300 to enter or roughly USD 12.00. The museum is not at all close to the train station so if you take a taxi that will be another JPY 2,000 one way or USD 18.50 (taxis are not cheap in Japan). Given these high prices if you ever go to Hakone to visit a real Japanese hot spring you might want to skip this museum.
